Who Created Ethereum?

In 2008, Bitcoin was invented as a revolutionary, secure, and confidential online payment method. Just three years later, the Ethereum platform was invented with an even greater ambition: to change our perception of the entire internet itself.

The Inventor of Ethereum

But who created Ethereum? Unlike the mysterious figure “Satoshi Nakamoto” behind Bitcoin, the inventor of Ethereum does not hide. This person is Vitalik Buterin, a young computer genius with a great interest in Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies. Buterin co-founded the website Bitcoin Magazine, and his dream was to create a blockchain-based platform for applications far beyond Bitcoin’s financial focus.

The Team Behind Ethereum

Buterin is a visionary who created Ethereum, but he wasn’t alone. The programmers who helped him turn his vision into reality are Mihai Alisie, Anthony Di Iorio, Charles Hoskinson, and Dr. Gavin Wood.

To make their platform viable, they designed a cryptocurrency called Ether, which people could “buy” to participate in the project during its fundraising in July 2014. Once the funding was complete, Ethereum was officially launched on July 30, 2015, marking the semi-official anniversary of this cryptocurrency.

The Unexpected Twist

There is, however, an unexpected twist in the story of Ether’s creation. The ETH currency emerged due to a split in the Ethereum community following a hack in 2016 against the organization in charge of funding its original platform. Those in favor of making changes to the initial blockchain code created Ethereum (ETH) as we know it today, while those who opposed the change developed Ethereum Classic (ETC).
